Why Solar - Business Case for Commercial Buildings

Grumet

Visitors frequent RTD Corp’s building #72’s rooftop to see one of New Jersey’s largest solar electric installations, installed by ABSOLUTELY ENERGIZED Solar. 3,468 solar panels work together on top of this single warehouse building to produce a peak power output of 606 Kilowatts (kWdc). Each year that yields over 690,000 kilowatt hours (kWh/yr), enough power to simultaneously supply all the needs of more than 90 homes.

Maximum building utilization is a key strategic goal for RTD Corp. The company has 5.5 million square feet of warehouse space at this 300 acre property. This solar electric system has created a profit center out of a rooftop that once would have been considered a liability. Best of all the federal government contributed 30% of the up-front cost in the form of IRS tax credits.

To date RTD’s solar system has produced significantly more electricity than originally projected. In 2007 the associated savings in electric costs and the selling of New Jersey Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) was worth over $280,000. Estimates from the New Jersey’s Office of Clean Energy indicate that the return from a system this size could reach as high as $560,000/yr in 2009.
